There are three projects called Kyty. Here's which one you have.
Search results, videos and download pages often say only "Kyty". That name now points to three different repositories with different owners, different platforms and different release histories.
The short answer
| You want to… | The repository you want | Owner |
|---|---|---|
| Run PS5 software on PC (Windows / Linux / macOS) | KytyPS5/KytyPS5 | KytyPS5 |
| Run PS5 software on an Xbox Series X|S | Cosmo/KytyPS5 | Cosmo (@maccosmo) |
| Follow the original 2022 tutorial you found | InoriRus/Kyty — dormant since 2022 | InoriRus |
Three different owners. Three different release histories. One name.
The comparison
| InoriRus/Kyty | KytyPS5/KytyPS5 | Cosmo/KytyPS5 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-description | "PS4 & PS5 emulator" | "PlayStation 5 translation layer for Windows, Linux and macOS" | "Port of KytyPS5, a PlayStation 5 translation layer for Xbox Series" |
| Status | Dormant — last commit October 3, 2022 | Active | Active |
| Platforms | Windows, Linux | Windows, Linux, macOS | Xbox Series X|S (UWP), Windows |
| Commits | ~49 | ~1,550 | ~1,630 |
| Stars | ~3.2k | ~9.1k | ~75 |
| Releases | 0.1.0 (May 2022), 0.2.0 (August 2022) | Dated builds via GitHub Actions | Dated builds via GitHub Actions |
| License | MIT | See repository page | GPL-2.0 |
Read that commit column carefully. The dormant repository has ~49 commits. The Xbox fork alone, a derivative of the other active project, has ~1,630 — more than 30× the original. Any tutorial that treats the 2022 project as the current state of PS5 emulation is describing a program that has not received a commit in four years.
What "dormant" actually means here
The last commits on InoriRus/Kyty landed on October 3, 2022. That is where it stops. This is not a scandal and not a failure — it is a 2022 project that did genuinely pioneering work on PS5 graphics and then stopped. The problem is discoverability: search "Kyty PS5 emulator" and a meaningful share of what you find still points there, because that is what existed when those pages were written.
How a fork becomes "the Kyty emulator"
- A project is forked to add a platform the upstream does not target — here, Xbox via UWP.
- The fork is packaged, filmed, and posted.
- A large outlet covers it and, reasonably enough, calls it "the KytyPS5 emulator".
- Readers remember one word: Kyty.
- Download sites fill the gap with pages that name no repository at all.
Every step is defensible on its own. The result is that three codebases with three different maturity levels share a name, and the newest, least-tested one is the one making headlines.
How to tell which one you are looking at
- Read the full owner name in the URL. github.com/InoriRus/Kyty ≠ github.com/KytyPS5/KytyPS5 ≠ github.com/Cosmo/KytyPS5. The repository name is identical in two of three; only the owner distinguishes them.
- Open Releases and look at the dates. A build with a date in the last few days means active development. A release list ending in 2022 means you are looking at history.
- Look for a LICENSE file and a Current Status section. Both active repositories carry status notes in their README — read those before you read any tutorial, including this page.
If a download page shows you a file and no repository, you cannot run any of these three checks. That is the point of not naming one.
Which should you use
On PC: KytyPS5/KytyPS5. It is the project with the most users, the most commits and the only one receiving changes. System requirements, build instructions and the current compatibility state are maintained in its own README — use those, not ours, because they change weekly.
On Xbox: Cosmo/KytyPS5, and read our Xbox page first. It runs Astro's Playroom at roughly 10 FPS on a Series X. It is a proof of concept, not a way to play.
On the 2022 project: nothing to use — but it is worth reading if you want to understand how the graphics path was originally built. Credit where it is due; it is just not 2026 software.
What all three have in common
None of them ship games or console firmware. None of them are affiliated with Sony. None of them will run a retail disc. All of them require game files you obtained legally. We do not host installers for any of them, and this page will never link to a site that does.
